Why's it so trendy for straight girls to hook up with other girls?

Here's a question we posed a few years ago at The Dragon Bar in North Beach, San Francisco: Why's it so trendy for straight girls to hook up with other girls? Is it because they want to impress the guys? Is it because guys in bars are just so slimey, girls these days prefer girls?
